The self-described ‘Salmon Fishing Capital of the World’, the City of Campbell River is the gateway to the North Island region and is the area’s main service centre. Like much of Vancouver Island Campbell River owes its origins to its location in a vast forested area. Forestry in all its forms, from logging to being the home of the former Elk Falls pulp mill powered the local economy for decades. Fishing, at first commercial but today a mix of commercial and sport fishing, has helped to see the community’s population swell to its current 32,500. Tourism, retail services, medicine and education are among the city’s main economic engines with retirees flocking to the area from across the country. Substance abuse and its related crime has become a problem in recent years. Violent crimes are reportedly down in the city with a Violent Crime Severity Index of 77 in the most recent stats, down from the previous 84.
