The largest city in British Columbia, the City of Vancouver is home to more than 662,000 residents, while being the largest portion of the overall Lower Mainland region of the province, with a collective population of more than 2.6 million. The Vancouver area was first inhabited by Europeans in the 1860s, but growing quickly it was incorporated as a city in 1886. Today it’s part of the third largest metropolitan area in Canada, and a global gateway thanks to its world-class harbour and international airport. A residential, industrial, retail, educational and business centre, the City of Vancouver is the core of business in British Columbia. With such a prominent role and function the city is also home to some serious crime issues. The Vancouver Police Department reported (in 2018) an overall crime rate of 6,750 incidents per 100,000 population, which is nine percent lower than the British Columbia average but 23 percent higher than the Canadian average.
