Originally known as Oyster Harbour, the Town of Ladysmith serves as a bedroom community to the nearby cities of Nanaimo and Duncan, while maintaining a distinctive charm all its own. Founded early in the 20th Century thanks to its proximity to both forestry and coal mining. Ladysmith has a population of approximately 9,000, and is known for being built on a series of hills, and for being home to the ‘Nicest Main Street’ in Canada. While the economic impact of the resource sectors has diminished in recent decades, the town’s importance as a tourist destination, service centre and suburban community has expanded to replace the loss. From a crime index point of view Ladysmith is a relative safe community with a crime rate 22 percent lower than the provincial average and 17 percent lower than the national average.
