Known for its world-class beach and access to Vancouver Island’s top recreational resources, the City of Parksville is in every sense a primary tourist destination. European settlers arrived in the region in the late 19th Century, drawn to its lush agriculture lands and other natural resources. By early in the 20th Century, while agriculture remains an active part of the regional economy it’s the city’s seaside appeal that is its main attraction. With a population of nearly 14,000, the City of Parksville has experienced dramatic growth in recent years, especially among seniors who have been drawn to the community’s natural setting and broad range of services and amenities. Not without its issues, Parksville’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) was 110.14 in 2021, well above the provincial average of 92.86. Incidents of violent crime rose from 53.91 in 2020 to 103.32 in 2021, while the non-violent CSI fell from 126.83 to 112.34.
